POSITION INFORMATION: Full-Time Permanent

MAJOR DUTIES: Assist supervisory archeologist in reviewing proposed Navy actions within NAVFAC Pacific area of cognizance for potential impacts to cultural resources, and compliance with historic preservation statues, regulations and guidelines. Advises Navy personnel on cultural resources protections requirements and assists in the development of plans to avoid, minimize and/or mitigate effects of proposed actions.  Under the supervision of the supervisory archaeologist, coordinates and consults with navy personnel, contractors, Federal and State agencies. Reviews environmental documents, technical reports, and other documents for Navy actions within NAVFAC Pacific's area of cognizance.  Assist senior archeologist in providing technical services and contracting support for archeological and historical resources surveys, archeological monitoring, and inventories of historically significant properties. Assists in identifying the need for, designing and conducting such surveys and inventories. Assists in preparing and reviewing forms for the nomination of historic properties for listing in the national Register of Historic places and designation as National Historic landmarks. Assists in coordinating with the designated Historic Preservation Officers, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation and other agencies and individuals. Reviews environmental planning documents, design and construction documents for compliance with historic preservation statues. Also assists in designing and recommending compliance measures including surveys, negation or mitigation or adverse effect through archival documentation, archaeological data collection, archaeological monitoring and project modification. Prepares and monitors contracts for projects and programs to mitigate adverse affects of Navy undertakings on national Register listed or eligible properties. Prepares and monitors archaeological technical services and contracting support for the preparation of historic preservation planning documents including Integrated Cultural Resources management Plans (ICRMP), Memorandum of Agreements (MOAs), Programmatic Agreements, Data Recovery Plans (DRPs) and Curation Plans.  Assist in identifying the need for, designing, and preparing such documents.

QUALIFICATIONS:   You must meet both the basic requirements and the requirements for the GS-9 level. In addition to meeting the basic requirements, you must have at least one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level or acceptable graduate education.  Specialized experience is fieldwork experience in historic preservation and excavating archaeological sites. Archaeological fieldwork includes, but is not limited to, archaeological monitoring, archaeological excavation, and/or archaeological surface survey. Your resume must clearly demonstrate sufficient experience, training and/or education, knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the specific position at the appropriate level for the position being announced.

Positions Open: Senior Archaeological Supervisor

Pacific Legacy, Inc. has open positions for Senior Managers in our California and Hawaii offices.  Offices are located in Bishop, Bakersfield, Cameron Park, Berkeley, Santa Cruz and Kailua, Oahu. We seek individuals with a Ph.D. or M.A. in Anthropology/Archaeology or closely related field, preferably with a focus on the prehistoric or historical archaeology of the western U. S. or the Pacific. Candidates must have at least five years of supervisory experience in cultural resource management and demonstrate intimate familiarity with NHPA Section 106 compliance. Candidate must meet the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for a Principal Investigator.

Candidates also must have considerable depth of experience conducting cultural resource inventory and evaluation studies, preparing and executing data recovery plans, and preparing technical and cost proposals for CRM projects. Successful applicants will also demonstrate a history of meeting project budget and schedule requirements. The ability to communicate effectively with a variety of clients in the public and private sector is a necessity, as is the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Excellent writing and communication skills are a must. Travel is expected to project areas.
